Today we learned more idioms with our fourth grade buddies. Our buddies taught us a new idiom, and we got to draw what we thought it would mean. Then our buddy told us if we were right, and we drew what it really means. It was super fun! We hope we do something like it again some time soon.
It's raining cats and dogs? What? I gotta go see this! Hey... you tricked me! We're just kidding! "Raining cats and dogs" is just an idiom. It really means it's raining hard. We learned about idioms from Amelia Bedelia. Do you know her? If not, we'll tell you about her. She's a character in a book we are reading as a class, and she doesn't understand idioms. One time, someone told her to bring a piece of cherry pie and "step on it"! That really means go fast, but Amelia Bedelia actually stepped on the pie! SPLAT!

Want to know what's on the menu? How about a Book Burger? Or a nice, juicy Story Steak with a side of Character Carrots? Now, we're just being silly. Here's what's really in the Reading Cafe - books and reading strategies! We go there to listen to great stories that Mrs. Freeman reads to us. It is so fun! We also learn about reading strategies and IDR (Independent Daily Reading). We will read every day in second grade. We are already reading for more than twenty minutes each day!!! Now you know all about the Reading Cafe. Do you still want that Story Steak with Character Carrots? Read apetit!
Hey, look up at the title! Do you think it's backwards? Well, it's not! Yesterday we read a really funny version of the Three Little Pigs, but this time, it was three little wolves! The wolves built different houses, but they all lived together. Have you ever seen a pig with a sledgehammer, a jackhammer, or dynamite? Well, the pig in this story uses all three! Isn't that weird? We've read different versions of this story and others too. We've also acted some folktales out in readers' theater. We even got to write our own versions of some folktales. We're still working on them. You'll see them when they're all finished. I guess, it's to be contnued...!
"Annnnnnnd... action!" That's what we say when we start a reader's theater performance. In reader's theater, we act out a story while we read. So far, we have been working on folk tales. We get to practice first with our script. Then, we practice with our groups so we do well in the play and don't make mistakes. It's fun practicing with our friends and deciding how we want to act it out. Really, REALLY fun - you should try it! Then, we perform it for the class (still using our scripts - it IS readers' theater!) and Mrs. Freeman tapes it. Every group gets compliments from the audience when they are done. After we're done acting it out, Mrs. Freeman gives us a checklist and we get to watch ourselves on the iPad and see how we did. If you want to see for yourself, you can find the videos on this very website! Just go to the Student Work tab. And that's the story of readers' theater in our classroom.
"And Mrs. Freeman's class lived happily ever after. The end!" Dear Readers, Hi there! My name is Ike LaRue. This week I came to Mrs. Freeman's class, and they were the worst audience I've ever seen in my life! Can you believe it? Mrs. Freeman blamed it on me, and she sent me to the principal's office! What kind of place is this, a school or a prison? Apparently, there's some kind of ridiculous rule about no dogs being allowed in school, and that guy kicked me right out! That was some bad luck for me, and I never saw that class again. At least I managed to get some food from the cafeteria on my way out! Honestly Yours, Ike (the dog) p.s. If you want to read a spectacularly awesome book, look up Dear Mrs. LaRue, by Mark Teague. Guess what? We are doing Book Clubs again. But this time, we are studying different characters. We like it because we have lots of things to do during book clubs. We can do listening centers, eat our snacks, and work on our writing when we aren't meeting with our book club. Today, we learned about character traits, like brave, silly, shy, kind, stubborn, and even more. We learned that character traits are different than feelings. Feelings come and go, but a character trait is how the character usually is.
Hi guys! It's us again! This time we're writing about our new Author Study book clubs. We've noticed that as we read more and more books by one author, we start to like them even more. And... we can even learn more about writing! One day, when we were at the Computer Lab, we got to research about our authors. We got to learn about their lives and their careers as authors. Some of them did silly things when they were kids, and some of them have written more than 100 books! See you later!
Happy New Year, authors! Before Winter Break, we were learning so much from Cynthia Rylant about how to be a writer. She said, "The world does not leave us empty-handed".
After we read that, we talked about what she meant. Some of our big ideas were:
What stories have you been noticing and living over the break? Leave a comment to tell us what has been on your mind while your'e away. You could leave some tiny topics to write about, or you could even write a whole story - it can even be a fiction story! You can also respond to other kids' ideas with stories and topics of your own. I can't wait to read all about your adventures! Once there was a super smarty class. They were making reindeer, and they got to write their own stories. That class was ours! We were excited because it was close to the holidays and we got to make a fun project. We got to pick a colored pompom for our reindeer's nose and put googly eyes on. Then, we got to name the reindeer and write a fiction story about it! Our stories are hanging up in the hallway. Come check them out!
Have you ever met a real author? Well, we have! Yesterday, we met a real author that came into our very room. Can you believe it?! Mr. Bill Smith was our old principal at Schroeder, and he wrote a book called Chickadees At Night. He recited the first page of it for us, and we loved it sooooo much that we wanted to read the whole book! Then, he said that we could find it in the teacher's lounge. So today, our teacher read it to us. We loved it! We were so excited to think that if he could be an author, we could too, someday! Find out more about the book here.
